Abstract
The urbanization phenomenon in East Java Province reflects a significant socio-economic transformation, with increased population concentration in urban areas. The objectives of this research are (1) Analyzing the spatial pattern of urbanization levels in East Java Province in 2020, and (2) Analyzing trends in urbanization levels in East Java Province from 2010 to 2020. The data is secondary data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), with a Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis approach to map urbanization patterns and trends. The results of this research show: (1) The level of urbanization in East Java Province is concentrated in large cities such as Surabaya, Malang, and Sidoarjo, which recorded the highest levels of urbanization. In contrast, rural areas such as Pacitan and Ngawi Regencies have relatively low levels of urbanization, with the spatial pattern obtained being a clustered pattern. (2) The trend in urbanization levels during the 2010-2020 decade shows stable growth in all districts and cities, with an average annual growth of 1.8%, the main contribution of which is infrastructure development, rural-urban migration, and economic factors. These findings underline the need for a holistic strategy in managing urbanization to ensure equitable development and balance between urban and rural areas. This research provides important recommendations for policymakers in formulating sustainable development policies in East Java Province.
