Abstract

Education plays a crucial role in shaping individual potential and character, serving as a fundamental pillar for national development. In Indonesia, the quality of education still requires substantial improvement. According to the 2022 PISA survey, Indonesia ranked 69th globally. The learning model remains predominantly theoretical, with limited experiential learning, resulting in low student engagement. The ongoing environmental crisis further highlights the lack of ecological awareness in everyday life. Surakarta, as a densely populated city with limited public green open spaces, necessitates an educational approach that enables direct interaction with nature. Eco-Learning Schools provide opportunities for contextual learning through exploratory activities. At the junior secondary level, this approach aligns well with students’ cognitive development, as they begin to understand cause-and-effect relationships. However, the number of Eco-Learning Schools at this level remains very limited—approximately 1% of all junior secondary schools in Surakarta. The Environmental Stewardship approach is implemented through environmentally responsive building design that harmonizes with the surrounding ecosystem. This strategy aims to establish a safe, comfortable, and sustainable learning environment that promotes meaningful interaction between students and nature, while accommodating ecological values and user needs.
