Abstract

Driver safety is a crucial aspect in efforts to reduce the number of traffic accidents, particularly those caused by alcohol influence and the driver’s unfit physical condition. This study aims to design and develop an Internet of Things (IoT)-based monitoring system capable of detecting alcohol levels and monitoring the driver's heart rate in real time through a smartphone application. The system utilizes the TGS2620 sensor to detect alcohol concentration in breath and the MAX30102 sensor to measure heart rate. The ESP8266 microcontroller functions as the main controller that manages sensor readings and transmits data to Firebase. System outputs are displayed via an I2C LCD and LED indicators as visual warnings. The Android application is designed to allow users to monitor measurement results in real time and access personal history logs based on their UID. Test results show that the system performs well, with an average error of 18.99% for alcohol detection and 1.59% for heart rate measurement. This system is considered effective as a portable solution capable of detecting the driver's condition in real time, thereby supporting enhanced road safety.
