Abstract
This study aims to analyze the representation of depressive disorder experienced by the character Nam Ha-neul in the Korean drama Doctor Slump. The drama depicts psychological pressures originating from a competitive and hierarchical medical work environment as well as emotional burdens resulting from family dynamics with high expectations. Roland Barthes' semiotic approach is applied to identify and interpret denotative, connotative, and mythic signs present in selected scenes. The analysis reveals that the depressive disorder experienced by the main character reflects the competitive and cultural pressures prevalent in South Korea. Furthermore, the drama realistically highlights mental health issues and serves as a reflective medium regarding the importance of awareness and support for individuals with depression. This study is expected to contribute theoretically to media semiotic studies and facilitate a deeper understanding of mental health representation in popular media.
