Abstract
This study examines the relationship between social media use and adolescent self-esteem, with body image as a mediating variable. The aim is to determine whether body image mediates the effect of social media use on self-esteem levels. The participants were 188 high school students aged 15–18 years, consisting of 144 females and 44 males, selected through purposive sampling. This research employed a quantitative approach using a survey method. Data were collected through three instruments: the Social Media Engagement Scale for Adolescents (SMES-A), the Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2), and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). The data were analyzed using multiple linear regression with SPSS software. The results indicated that social media use has a significant negative effect on adolescent self-esteem, and body image partially mediates this relationship. These findings support the Uses and Gratifications Theory, which suggests that social media is used to fulfill certain psychological needs but may lead to adverse outcomes when used excessively. The study concludes that high social media engagement may reduce self-esteem, particularly among adolescents with low body image. The implications underscore the importance of digital literacy education and the promotion of positive body image as preventive efforts to protect adolescent self-esteem in the digital era.
