Abstract

Utilization of alternative energy sources derived from the potential kinetic energy of water through the Micro Hydro Power Plant (PLTMH) system is in line with the increasing need for electricity today. This study aims to design and test the performance of a vertical turbine with adaptive blades that can utilize zero head water flow with low flow rate. The kinetic energy of the water flow will be utilized as mechanical energy that rotates the turbine, then converted into electrical energy by a DC generator. The study focuses on the performance of a vertical turbine with free-swing blades to determine power, torque, rpm, and efficiency. This study was conducted with a comparison in the form of a fixed-axis vertical turbine to determine which turbine is better. Testing was carried out by adding a tool in the form of a Dynamic Torque Meter (DYN200) to determine the rotational speed and torque of the turbine. This system is equipped with an INA219 sensor which is used to determine the measured voltage and current. This system can be monitored in real-time via a Web Server that can be accessed by users via the Access Point from ESP32. Based on the results of the tests that have been carried out, the free-swing blade turbine is mechanically superior with an average torque reaching 0,737 Nm and a turbine rotational speed of 25,12 rpm at low water discharge. Meanwhile, electrically, fixed-axis turbines are superior in generating electrical power with an average voltage from the generator of 12,44 V, battery test power of 7,88 W, and load power of 0,526 W. This because teha capacity of the generator used has decresed. MHP with vertical-axis turbines with free-swing blades is able to adapt to low water discharge with greater torque and RPM results compared to fixed-axis turbines. However, it is necessary to select the right generator to maximize electrical power to get more optimal results.
