Abstract

This study aims to examine the representation of women in the songs of the Korean girl group (G)I-DLE through Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach. The analysis focuses on five selected songs Tomboy, Nxde, Queencard, Wife, and Super Lady chosen for their symbolic messages related to gender issues, feminism, and female identity within the context of South Korean culture. This research employs a qualitative method with purposive sampling, using song lyrics as the unit of analysis, and analyzes them using Roland Barthes' semiotics. The results reveal that (G)I-DLE’s lyrics represent women through five main categories: rejection of objectification, women as leaders, self-acceptance, self-celebration, and rejection of traditional roles as wives. Each category reflects a form of resistance to the patriarchal social constructs that remain dominant in Korean culture. The symbols in the lyrics reinforce contemporary feminist narratives, such as the rejection of beauty standards, criticism of domestic roles, and affirmation of women's independence and leadership. These findings suggest that K-pop music, particularly the works of (G)I-DLE, functions as a cultural medium capable of shaping and disseminating alternative discourses about women in modern society.
