Abstract

Discrimination against people with disabilities is still a significant social problem in society. They are often treated unfairly because they are considered different and do not conform to dominant social norms. The media, especially films, play an important role in shaping public perceptions of the disabled group. This study aims to analyze how the representation of discrimination against people with disabilities is displayed in the film My Idiot Brother. The method used is qualitative with a content analysis approach through Roland Barthes' semiotic theory, and is based on the constructivism paradigm and the cultural context of collectivism in Indonesia. The results of the study show that the film displays discrimination both verbally (insults, ridicule) and non-verbally (exclusion, gestures of rejection, gazes). The character Hendra, a person with a mental disability (autism), is depicted as someone who is not independent, a burden on the family, and a source of shame. At the denotation level, discrimination appears in dialogue and environmental attitudes. At the connotation level, disability is associated with social rejection. While at the myth level, the film reproduces the view that people with disabilities deviate from normality. This study emphasizes that the media not only reflects social reality, but also reinforces discriminatory ideologies, so it is important to dismantle this representation in order to build an inclusive society.
