Abstract
Background: Nutritional status is influenced by various factors, one of which is dietary patterns, such as the consumption of sweetened beverages. In the context of an increasingly modern lifestyle, contemporary sweetened beverages have become a popular choice among students; however, excessive consumption can have negative effects on health. An individual's consumption patterns are greatly influenced by their knowledge of the products they intend to purchase and their financial ability to buy those products. In the case of students, their ability to purchase various types of modern sweetened beverages is also related to their financial capacity, which, of course, depends on how much money they have. Objective: This study aims to investigate the relationship between pocket money and the consumption of sweetened beverages among non-health science students at Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta. Research method: This study is an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design. Sampling was conducted using proportional random sampling. The sample size was 105 respondents. Economic status data was collected using a questionnaire on pocket money amounts, and the frequency of sweet beverage consumption was measured through the completion of a Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) over the past month. Statistical analysis was performed using the Spearman's Rank Correlation Test. Research results: The majority of pocket money amounts fell into the “sufficient” category (45.7%), and most respondents had a high frequency of sweet drink consumption (55.2%). The Spearman's Rank test yielded a p-value of 0.047, indicating a significant association between pocket money and consumption of trendy sweet drinks. Conclusion: There is a relationship between pocket money and consumption of modern sweet beverages among non-health students at Muhammadiyah University Surakarta.
