Abstract

This study aims to describe the mapping of initial competencies of grade IV students of SD Negeri Joglo Surakarta who have difficulty reading, identify the causes of these difficulties, and describe the efforts and strategies taken by teachers in overcoming them in order to optimize students' reading abilities. The approach used in this study is qualitative with a descriptive analytical design. The subjects of the study consisted of six grade IV students who had difficulty reading, grade IV teachers, and the principal. Data collection techniques were carried out through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, which were then analyzed using data reduction techniques, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The validity of the data was tested by triangulation of techniques and triangulation of sources. The results of the study showed that students had difficulty reading in the aspects of spelling, pronouncing letters, recognizing similar letters, paying attention to punctuation, and understanding texts. Teachers identified these difficulties through initial mapping and applied various methods such as phonetic approaches, intensive exercises, use of visual media, and fun approaches such as reading together and listening to stories. These efforts proved effective because students showed improvements in reading fluency, text comprehension, and reading motivation. This study emphasizes the importance of adaptive and comprehensive learning strategies in overcoming reading difficulties, as well as the need for early intervention to minimize literacy barriers at the elementary education level.
