Abstract

Final year students are faced with various pressures such as completing many assignments, demands to graduate on time, and the process of completing a thesis which can cause academic stress. In facing academic demands, final year students need to have good self-efficacy and resilience. This study aims to examine the relationship between self-efficacy and resilience with academic stress of final year students. This study involved 210 students of the 2021 intake from 12 faculties at the Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta who were selected through incidental techniques. The research method used is the quantitative correlational method. The instruments used in this study were the self-efficacy scale, the resilience scale, and the academic stress scale. The results of multiple linear regression analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between the self-efficacy and resilience variables with the academic stress variable (R square = 0.054; F = 5.884; sig = 0.003 (p <0.05)). There is a significant negative relationship between the variables of self-efficacy and academic stress (r = -0.180; p = 0.004 (p <0.05)) and there is a significant negative relationship between the variables of resilience and academic stress (r = -0.218; p = 0.001 (p <0.05)). The contribution of the effective variables of self-efficacy and resilience to academic stress is 5.4% with self-efficacy contributing 1.65% and resilience contributing 3.70%. The results of the study indicate that final year students of Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta have moderate levels of academic stress, very high self-efficacy, and high resilience.
