Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the depiction of ethnic oppression in R.F. Kuang’s The Poppy War (2018) through a qualitative literary research approach. The study focused around three primary objectives: (1) to identify the indicators of ethnic oppression within the novel, (2) to describe how ethnic oppression is depicted through literary elements such as characterization, setting, and plot, and (3) to explore the reasons why Kuang addressed the issue of ethnic oppression in her work. The study utilized primary data from The Poppy War and secondary data sourced from academic journals, interviews, and historical references. The study's findings revealed that ethnic oppression in the novel is reflected through indicators include systemic marginalization, cultural erasure, and institutional prejudice. The depiction of oppression is through the novel's characterization, setting, and key events. Eventually, the findings also revealed that Kuang used the fictional world of The Poppy War to reflect on real-world ethnic injustices and to process her personal and familial trauma, which was inspired by historical event.
