Abstract

This study aims to analyze the character of Majnun (Qays) in the novel Layla Majnun by Nizami Ganjavi (1966) with Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory. This research focuses on finding the cause of Majnun's madness, his response to the problems he faced, and his psychological impact that changed his life drastically. In this study, researcher used a qualitative approach with descriptive methods, and used literature studies to obtain data, either in the novel directly or from other similar sources. Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theory consists of id, ego, superego, and ego defense mechanisms. The findings in this study are that Majnun's madness is caused by the strong dominance of the id over Layla while the ego and superego are unable to restrain and suppress the id's impulses. In responding to the pressure Majnun experiences, Majnun brings up ego defense mechanisms such as projection (blaming things around him), rationalization (seeking justification by making logical reasons), and regression (showing behavior that is not in accordance with his level of cognitive development). The inner conflict experienced by Majnun has a massive impact on her life, such as behavioral and mental changes, as well as self-isolation, isolation by society, and loss of identity. This research emphasizes that an individual's emotional experience can trigger mental distress or complex mental stress if the individual is unable to cope.
