Abstract

Learning opportunities provided to all children, including those with special needs, constitute inclusive education. The diversity of students requires teachers to possess skills to manage heterogeneous classrooms. This study aims to identify the skills needed by teachers in managing heterogeneous classes, analyze the application of these skills in teaching practices, and identify the challenges faced by teachers as well as strategies to overcome them. This research employs a qualitative phenomenological method. Data were collected through interviews and observations. The study was conducted in two inclusive schools: MI Muhammadiyah PK Kartasura and SD Negeri Manahan. The results indicate that the skills possessed by teachers in managing heterogeneous classes include being adaptive to the needs of students, not discriminating and providing equal opportunities for all students, creating a supportive learning environment, contextualizing teaching content, using diverse methods, implementing ice-breaking activities, being patient, consistent, and reinforcing learning through repetition of material. The implementation of skills in heterogeneous classrooms shows that the skills discussed during interviews are well implemented. The challenges faced by teachers in managing heterogeneous classes include students with special needs disrupting other students during tantrums, limited resources, a shortage of support teachers, insufficient training for teachers, and difficulties in collaborating with parents. To address these challenges, teachers employ the following strategies: developing inclusive teaching skills, providing understanding to parents and collaborating effectively, participating in training, and calming students during tantrums.
