Abstract

This study discusses the significance of the age of forty, based on the analysis of QS. Al-Ahqaf verse 15 in Ibn Kathir's exegesis (tafsir). Among the numerous numerical references in the Qur'an, one of them is the mention of the number forty in QS. Al-Ahqaf verse 15, which addresses human maturity and adulthood upon reaching the age of forty. In fact, many scholars of tafsir state that no prophet was sent except that they had reached the age of forty. This study examines the views of the mufassirun (Qur'anic interpreters) regarding the age of arba'in (forty) in the Qur'an and its relevance to the standard of adulthood. This is a library research study, and the methodology used is a thematic (maudhu'i) study. The data related to this study was collected through a literature review with a qualitative data analysis approach. This study is presented using descriptive analysis techniques, explaining the relevant verses by referring to the Qur'an and Ibn Kathir’s tafsir as primary data, and related literature books as secondary data. The results of this study are as follows: First, the interpretation of QS. Al-Ahqaf verse 15 according to Ibn Kathir includes the obligation of children to be kind to their parents, the role of parents in educating their children, and the transition to adulthood when a person reaches the age of forty. Second, Ibn Kathir considers someone who reaches the age of forty as a person who possesses certain qualities, such as mental maturity, understanding, and patience.
