Abstract

This research explores the role of fatherhood in the movie The Pursuit of Happyness, with a particular focus on the character of Chris Gardner. As the central figure of the film, Gardner's relationship with his son is not only pivotal to his personal journey but also reflects broader themes of sacrifice, resilience, and love. This study examines how his role as a father shapes his decisions and motivations, contributing to the portrayal of fatherhood as a powerful force in overcoming hardship. Using a qualitative content analysis method, the research employs narrative analysis to deconstruct key scenes and character interactions, highlighting the emotional and psychological impacts of fatherhood on Gardner’s development. Primary data are derived from close viewing of the film, while secondary data are drawn from academic sources on film theory, psychology, and fatherhood studies. The focus of this study is the psychological impact of fatherhood on Gardner’s character arc, particularly how his relationship with his son drives him to persevere through overwhelming obstacles, as well as the broader representation of fatherhood amid financial struggles and social adversity.
