Abstract

As living beings, humans need language to communicate with each other. The complex structure of Indonesian language as a means of communication consists of several morphological components that combine to produce words and meanings. Affixation is an important component in morphology. Prefixes and suffixes are two of the many types of affixes used in Indonesian. It is hoped that this study can provide a broad understanding of how seventh grade students at SMP Muhammadiyah 2 Surakarta use prefixes and suffixes in their writing. By examining data in the form of student composition texts and providing in-depth explanations of the prefixes and suffixes used in the text, this study uses qualitative descriptive techniques. Based on the results of the analysis and discussion, it can be concluded that there are various types of prefixes and suffixes and errors in their use. There are six types of prefixes that can be found in the writings of students at SMP Muhammadiyah Surakarta, namely men-, ber-, di-, ter-, pen-, and se-. There are four types of suffixes, namely -kan, -an, -I, and -nya. In addition, errors were also found in the use of the prefixes di- and me-.
