Abstract

The movie "Dead Poets Society", set in an American boarding school called Welton Academy, illustrates the impact of literature on the development of individual thought. The purpose of this study is to explore how the characters in the movie use literature to open their minds, develop their identities, and dare to challenge restrictive social norms. In this film, the life lessons taught by Mr. Keating are summarized in literary language in the form of poems that live in the souls of his students. The object of study in this research is the learning of literature, the character of John Keating as an inspirational teacher, and his students such as Neil Perry, and Todd Anderson, especially the influence of poetry taught by John Keating to them. This research uses descriptive qualitative research methods, such as explanatory text from the movie text, interviews with the audience, documentation, and note-taking. The results showed that the literary works taught by Mr. John Keating to his students had a great influence on the change in the audience's thinking, changes in individualism, changes in one's courage, and daring to oppose the prevailing traditions.
