Abstract

Movies, as a form of mass media, have the ability to influence audiences. Therefore, movies are one of the most effective media to convey messages to its target audience. One of the movie themes that is popular among people is friendship. A movie that raises this theme is the movie All The Bright Places. This movie tells the story of a friendship wrapped in conflicts due to mental health between the two main characters, Theodore Finch and Violet Markey. The purpose of this research is to analyze how friendship needs are represented in the film. This research is descriptive qualitative by observing and documenting the movie All The Bright Places. The research subject is the movie All The Bright Places itself, with reference to the scenes that represent the need for friendship. The researcher uses the semiotic analysis method according to Roland Barthes, where there are signifier and signified in the level of denotation, connotation and myth in each scene that represents the need for friendship. The results showed that there are three forms of friendship needs represented in the movie All The Bright Places, namely emotional support in friendship, protection of feelings through a safe space in friendship, and encouragement of inspiration and sharing perspectives on a shared journey. The relationship between Theodore Finch and Violet Markey illustrates the role of interpersonal communication in fulfilling friendship needs, which is the main foundation of their relationship.
