Abstract

Global climate change caused by increasing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions has become one of the most pressing environmental issues worldwide, including in Indonesia. This study aims to identify the factors influencing the rise in CO2 emissions in Indonesia, focusing on forest area, the number of industries, unemployment, and corruption. Using secondary time-series data from 1990 to 2020, the analysis was conducted using a simple linear regression model (Ordinary Least Squares/OLS). The results show that forest area has a negative and significant effect on CO2 emissions, indicating that an increase in forest area can reduce carbon emissions. Meanwhile, the number of industries and corruption have no significant impact on CO2 emissions, although both exhibit a positive influence. On the contrary, unemployment has a negative and significant effect on CO2 emissions, suggesting that higher unemployment rates may contribute to reduced emissions. These findings contribute to understanding the role of environmental and social factors in climate change in Indonesia and provide policy recommendations for better forest management and more inclusive job creation to mitigate negative environmental impacts.
