Abstract

Idiom is one of many problems that appeared in translation. Many words and expressions in the Source Language cannot be translated directly into Target Language. Translators should understand the purpose of the text in Source Language and translate it into target Language. The research is focussing the idiomatic words used in the novel written by Gregory Meguire titled Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister. The purpose of this research is to classify the type of the idiomatic words used in the novel and the strategies used in translating the idiomatic words. This research was descriptive-qualitative research. The objects of this research are the novel Confessions of an Ugly Stepsisters (1999) by Gregory Meguire in English and its translation in Indonesian translated by Khairi Rumantati. The research used document analysis method. The idiomatic words that had been listed and coded from both English and Indonesian version were analyzed using Fernando’s theory of idioms and Baker’s theory of translation strategies. The researcher found that there are 200 idiomatic words found in the novel. Based on theory of idioms by Fernando, it was discovered that there are three types of idiomatic words found in the novel; pure idioms (38%), semi-idioms (40%), and literal idioms (22%). Moreover, for the translation strategies shows that paraphrase get the highest percentage (68,5%), followed by using an idiom of similar meaning and form (22%) and using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form (9,5%).
