Abstract

This study is motivated by the importance of Arabic language learning strategies in improving students’ language skills in Islamic boarding school environments, where language functions not only as a communication tool but also as a medium for understanding Islamic sources. In practice, variations in students’ language proficiency are still found, which are influenced by the implementation of learning strategies that are not yet fully optimal and contextual to the learning environment. This research aims to analyze the Arabic language learning strategies applied and their contribution to improving the language skills of senior high school students at Pondok Pesantren Ibnu Abbas. This study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design. The research subjects consisted of Arabic language teachers and students, while data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted systematically through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, with data validity ensured through source and technique triangulation. The findings indicate that the implemented learning strategies include communicative methods, language habituation (bi’ah lughawiyah), and varied instructional techniques that emphasize active language practice. These strategies contribute to the improvement of students’ language skills, particularly in speaking (maharah kalam) and listening (maharah istima’), supported by a conducive language environment and interactive learning processes. Therefore, an integrated learning strategy combining instructional methods, language environment, and communicative activities is proven to be effective in enhancing students’ Arabic language skills in a more adaptive and sustainable manner.
