Abstract

This research studies linguistic impoliteness found in Freedom Writers movie and the function of the use of linguistic impoliteness. The aims of this study are (1) to find out types of linguistic impoliteness, and (2) to find out the function of linguistic impoliteness in Freedom Writers movie. The method is descriptive qualitative with content analysis and using documentation for collected the data. The researcher applies it by analysing the types of impoliteness using Culpeper’s theory (1996) and the function of impoliteness using Culpeper’s theory (2011). The object of this research is the linguistic impoliteness found in the character of Freedom Writers movie, and the subject of this research is characters in Freedom Writers movie. The researcher used data analysis techniques by Miles, Huberman, & Saldana (2014) to collect data such is data collection, data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. Then, the data validation are used in this study is expert judgment. The findings of this study are (1) the researcher found all types of linguistic impoliteness, including bald on record, positive impoliteness, negative impoliteness, sarcasm or mock politeness, and withhold politeness, (2) this finding shows several functions of linguistic impoliteness, such as impoliteness affective, coercive impoliteness, and entertaining impoliteness, (3) it can be concluded that the character as a native speaker has a good competent language, so that he or she can use the types and functions of linguistic impoliteness with various variations.
