Abstract

This study aims to describe the difficulty of solving PISA-oriented mathematical problems in terms of critical thinking skills and the difficulty factors experienced by class VIII students at SMP Negeri 2 Polanharjo with 6 students taking the subject. This type of research is descriptive qualitative research. Data was collected using the written test and interview methods. The data analysis technique was carried out by data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The validity of the data using triangulation techniques by comparing the results of student work with the results of interviews that have been conducted. The analytical framework is based on indicators of critical thinking skills, namely simple explanations, basic explanations, strategies and tactics, further explanations, and conclusions. Difficulties in solving PISA problems based on critical thinking skills can be concluded as: 1) difficulties in concepts, 2) difficulties in principles, 3) difficulties in verbal problems. In general, the factors that cause difficulties experienced by students are 1) students' low understanding abilities, 2) students' difficulties in reading the subject matter, 3) students' weak memory in using formulas, 4) students' low abilities in interpreting or entering data into formulas. , 5) do not review or recheck answers.
