Abstract
Fear of the negative impact of consumerism in Indonesia has prompted a group of people in the city of Solo to establish an idealistic philanthropic movement called Joli-jolan. Volunteers of this movement seek to raise awareness of the upper socio-economic class about excessive consumption activities, while helping the lower middle class through recycling activities for disposable goods and other self-help activities. The purpose of this study is to describe how meaningful the lives of the Joli-jolan Philanthropic Movement volunteers are. This research method uses qualitative research with a phenomenological approach. Based on the analysis of interview data with 5 informants related to self-understanding, it was revealed that volunteers can find meaning in life through an attitude of acceptance, or surrender to life by liking and living life. Joli-jolan volunteers have improved in terms of insight, perspective, and relationships. The motivation to share and help others through volunteer roles has increased the meaning of life for the informants. Volunteers feel they have learned a lot to update their attitude for the better. The informants tried to maintain positive things in life through the agenda of gatherings and discussions with Joli-Jolan activists. Volunteers also get social support from their closest people and family to contribute in Joli-Jolan. The informants felt the benefits of personality expansion, social support, and spiritual and religious strengthening while participating in the activities in Joli-jolan.
