Abstract
This study aims to compare the methods of Centrifugal Die Casting and Centrifugal Investment Casting on the chemical composition of density, porosity, microstructure and hardness with aluminum as raw material from used pistons. In this study, using the Centrifugal Die Casting and Centrifugal Investment Casting methods with a pouring temperature of 750 ° C and a centrifugal casting motor rotational speed of 700 rpm. Chemical composition testing using Emmision Spectrometry (ASTM E-1251). Density calculation is done by calculating the mass and volume of the castings. Porosity observations were carried out with macro photos using a digital microscope. Testing of the microstructure of the castings using a metallographic microscope (ASTM E3-11). Hardness testing uses the Vickers hardness tester (ASTM E-384). The results of the chemical composition test show that this material contains the composition of (Al) 71.05%, (Si) 13.65%, (Cu) 7.178%, (Ni) 0.9136%, (Fe) 3.4508% and other elements. . others., according to the ASTM standard B-85-03 classified into Aluminum Al-Si (Aluminum - Silicon) A413.0. The density and porosity calculation results in the centrifugal die casting have a density value of 2.7054 gr / cm3, while for the centrifugal investment casting method it is 2.6978 gr / cm3. The results of porosity observations show that the amount of porosity affects the density value. The results of the microstructure observation consisted of α (Al) and β (Si) phases. The beta (Si) phase granules in investment casting centrifuges look bigger and bigger. If on a centrifugal die casting, the beta phase granules look smaller and the amount is less. Large, the number and distribution of beta grains affect the price of hardness. The results of the hardness tester with centrifugal investment casting with a hardness value of 98.50 HVN, centrifugal die casting has a hardness value of 104.75 HVN.
