Abstract

Feelings and emotions are generally characterized as states that exist in an individual or organism at a time. Frustration is a condition associated with stress and hopelessness. Sadness is an emotion characterized by feelings of disadvantage, loss, and helplessness. When sad, people often become quieter, less excited, and withdrawn. This study aims to: (1) Describe the main character, especially his psychological dimension, to analyze his behavior/personality in general. (2) Analyze and explain the relationship between the theory of the development of psychological needs of the main character in psychological conditions using Sigmund Freud's theory. The design of this study used descriptive qualitative research. The data of this research are excerpts containing feelings of frustration and sadness described in the novel If I Stay (2009). Researchers used a psychoanalytic approach to collect data. From this research shows the feelings of frustration and sadness experienced by Mia Hall in going through her crisis situation so that she has a reason to survive for the love she has and for the future she has hoped for.
