Abstract
Students’ mistakes in solving mathematic problems often occur because of the wrong choice and use of the settlement procedure. Using the stages of Polya theory completion to determine the location of students' mistakes in working on math problems. This study aims to describe the types of errors and describe the factors causing the errors of students in solving HOTS type algebraic forms based on Polya theory. This research is a qualitative descriptive study involving 29 students of class VII B of SMP Negeri 1 Ngemplak. Data collection techniques in this study are tests and interviews, while data analysis through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study indicate that the subject errors S-01, S-03, and S-04 are still in stage II in the theory of Polya namely understanding the problem and planning problem-solving. While the subject errors S-02 and S-05 are already in stage IV in Polya theory, namely understanding the problem, planning problem solving, carrying out problem-solving, and looking back. The actors who influence students in solving problems are due to internal and external factors. Internal factors of the students themselves, such as never learning before the test and forget about the material that has been taught before, in a hurry to work on, or just rely on answers from friends. While external factors, such as inaccurate work, are wrong in operating algebraic forms, and there is no step in checking the answers.
