Abstract
This study aims to analyze the mathematical connection abilities of Field Independent (FI) students and Field Dependent (FD) students in solving algebraic material story problems based on a cognitive style review. Mathematical connections have three indicators, namely (1) Connections between topics in mathematics. (2) The connection between mathematical topics and other disciplines. (3) Connection between math topics and everyday life. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of the study were Grade VII students of SMP Muhammadiyah 10 Surakarta. 12 students were selected consisting of 6 students in the Field Dependent category with a score of 10-18 and 6 students in the Field Dependent category with a score of 0-9. The data collection technique is done by using test, interview and documentation methods. The validity of the data used the triangulation method. The results of this study, namely students in the Field Independent category showed better results than students with the Field Dependent category in understanding, linking, and solving mathematical problems with the appropriate indicators. Based on the results of the study it can be concluded that the mathematical connection ability of students in the Field Independent category is better than the mathematical connection ability of students in the Field Dependent category.
