Abstract
Introduction: Diabetes mellitus type II is a metabolic disease of progressive reduction in the function of pancreatic beta cells caused by insulin resistance resulting in an increase in blood glucose levels, hyperinsulinemia and abnormal fat function which is characterized by an increase in blood cholesterol levels (ADA, 2004). The risk factors that affect high cholesterol in DM patients are also factors from outside the body is eating disorders, especially a low-fiber diet Objective : This study aimed to determine the correlation between fiber intake and cholesterol levels in patients suffering diabetes mellitus type II. Research Method : The research design used in this study was a critical review by criticizing journals sourced from the database https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/ with search keywords: "diabetes", "cholesterol", and "fiber" , the articles were selected then screened in database https://www.scimagojr.com/. The article inclusion criteria used English, free full text, articles published in the last 10 years, types of journal articles, clinical trials and randomized controlled trials, subject were non-human and the exclusion criteria for articles non-diabetic patients and articles not published in journals Q1 - Q4 . Results: Based on the 5 articles analyzed, fiber consumption from 16 g / day to 29 g / day and 10.5 g psyllium fiber supplementation can improve cholesterol levels in DM subjects and while cholesterol levels of all articles were in the normal category. All articles showed significant correlation (p <0.05) between fiber intake and total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol levels in diabetes mellitus patients. In the third article, the effect of physllium fiber supplementation also showed a significant reduction (p <0.05) in total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels in diabetes mellitus patients. Conclusion : From the 5 journals that have been reviewed, it can be concluded that the consumption of fiber from both food and supplements had a significant correlation with blood cholesterol levels in diabetes mellitus patients.
