Abstract
The carburizing process is a method of hardening steel by adding a carbon element to the steel surface with austenite temperature. The purpose of this research is to see changes in microstructure and surface hardness of ST 60 steel. After the carburizing process with a temperature of 825 ° C for 4 hours using wood charcoal that has been processed. Furthermore, the carbon sifting process is carried out so that a carbon mesh size of 100 dry mesh with a particle size of 554,621 μm² and 500 upper wet mesh produces an average carbon particle area of 113,542 μm², a decrease in the number of carbon particles after carburizing is done. Carbon with an average particle area of 554,621 µm² was lost as much as 33.58%, while carbon with an average particle area of 113,542 μm² was lost as much as 9.91%. Microstructure testing aims to determine the phase of steel after undergoing the carburizing process. Hardness testing aims to determine the hardness of the material after the carburizing process.
