Abstract

This research was conducted to investigate the effect of variations in the grain size of carbon on the hardness and mirco structure of ST 60 carbon steel in the pack carburizing process. The pack carburizing process is widely used to increase the surface hardness of steel. In this study, the carbon grain sizes used were mesh 80 (177 µm), 100 (149 µm), 120 (125 µm) and 140 (105 µm). In this study, the carburizing process was carried out at a temperature of 900 ° C with a holding time of 1 hour. The results of this study indicate that the variation in the size of carbon mesh 80 (177 µm) has an average hardness of 55.6 HRC. In mesh 100 (149 µm) the average hardness value was 57.2 HRC. Then in mesh 120 (125 µm) the average hardness value was 57.3 HRC and in mesh 140 (105 µm) was 57.9 HRC. Raw material has an average hardness value of 66.7 HRB. So the raw material after carburizing experienced an increase in hardness by 413-450%. Thus the carbon grain size in the pack carburizing process affects the hardness of the material.
