Abstract
This study aims to analyze and describe the mathematical communication skills of students in the cognitive style of field independent and field independent in solving open-ended questions. This research was conducted at SMP Negeri 2 Purwareja Klampok involving 29 students of class VIII A. This type of qualitative research uses data collection techniques used in this study, namely test questions, documentation, and interviews. The selection of subjects based on cognitive style was then categorized according to the level of mathematical communication skills. The data analysis used, namely data reduction, presentation of data, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study concluded that: (1) Students with field independent and field dependent cognitive styles tend to express mathematical ideas in expressing information verbally rather than in writing, (2) Students with field independent cognitive style in high and moderate categories are able to meet all indicators, while the low category is only able to present partly mathematical ideas and evaluating mathematical ideas (3) Students with high category field dependent cognitive style are able to meet indicators of expressing mathematical ideas, presenting mathematical ideas, evaluating mathematical ideas. The moderate category is only able to meet the indicators of expressing mathematical ideas. The low category is not able to fulfill all indicators perfectly.
