Abstract
Groceries are the basic supplies in humans’ life. Because they are primary in nature, they can be found in a traditional or modern market easily. Without groceries, the life of Indonesians is disturbed. Therefore, groceries are the main needs which must be sold in the market every single day. Spatial pattern of the people in choosing the groceries store is influenced by some factors, such as age, educational background, occupation, income, and number of dependants. Due to the high number of shopping centre, it can be found that consumers nowadays are selective to choose the place for shopping. The consumers’ concern sets the decision to choose shopping centre that is more interesting and has many types of goods. Besides, the shopping centre is selected based on their personal choice and taste. This research is aimed to (1) Find out the characteristic differences between people who are shopping in the modern market and the ones in the traditional market, (2) determine the spatial pattern in selecting location of grocery stores in the urban village of Pandean, (3) discover the factors which influence the people’s decision of the urban village of Pandean in choosing the stores to shop. The method of research is by conducting survey which uses questioners. Further, Nearest Neighbour Analysis is applied to determine the dispersal pattern. The result of this research indicates that (1) the people’s characteristic differences are in terms of age, educational background, income, occupation, and number of dependants. People who are above 40 years old tend to go shopping in a traditional market. Meanwhile, people who has higher educational background tend to choose a modern market. Besides, most female workers choose to purchase groceries in a modern market which is connected to the shopping malls. People who earns more than IDR 5.000.000 tend to purchase groceries monthly rather than daily. Moreover, those who have more dependants and earn low income purchase groceries in a traditional market. (2) The spatial pattern which is explained by applying Nearest Neighbour Analysis shows that the dispersal pattern of people who go shopping in a traditional market has Random pattern and the ones who go shopping in a modern market has Clustered pattern. (3) The most dominant factor which influences people to choose the store to shop is their tendency to go shopping in a traditional market. It is because there are many variety of goods, the price is affordable, and the place is reachable (less than 1,5 km).
