Abstract

This research aims at (1) identifying the kinds of flouting maxims that used by Gardner in The Pursuit of Happyness movie (2) describing the reason for using flouting maxims in The Pursuit of Happyness movie used by Gardner. The type of this research is descriptive qualitative research. The data of this study were in the form of utterances. The data source were taken from the movie The Pursuit of Happyness that was directed by Gabriele Muccino. The method of collecting data is documentation. Investigator triangulation is applied by cross checking the findings or the interpretation of data with expert judgement in order to strengthen the validity. The technique of analyzing data used the theory of Grice (1989) and Cutting (2002). As a result, first there are 4 kinds of flouting maxims namely maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relation and maxim of manner. Second, there are 10 reasons of flouting maxims overstatement, understatement, tautology, hyperbole, metaphor, irony, banter, sarcasm, changing topic and not brief.
