Abstract

Gedongtengen sub-district is part of Yogyakarta that has the highest number of hotels. The increasing number of tourists each year makes the need for lodging accommodations increase. In 2017, there were 160 hotel buildings in this district. The number of hotels is feared to have an impact on the social and economic conditions of society. The purpose of this study are 1) To examine the socioeconomic characteristics of the population in Gedongtengen District, and 2) Assess the impact of the hotel on socio-economic conditions in the Gedongtengen District. The analytical method is descriptive analysis using qualitative data. Survey as data collection techniques is used to get the primary data. The results showed that 1) Characteristics of the social and economic conditions on Gedongtengen Subdistrict, both in the near, middle, and far areas are not much different. The awareness of education is relatively high. High school or vocational school is dominates in every area for both parents and children. The number of dependents in a family has varied values, in one family is dominated by two children. The economic condition of the community is good, as seen from the amount of community income ranging from Rp. 1,500,000 to Rp. 2,000,000, which is close to the value of the “Upah Minimum Kota (UMK)”. 2) Hotel did not have too much impact on social conditions while the economic conditions had direct and indirect impacts. The impact on social conditions is not very visible in all three areas. Society tends to be influenced by internal factor, especially in education. Direct and indirect impacts are seen in economic conditions. Direct impact provides new jobs for the surrounding community. Entrepreneurial and motorcycle taxi profession has increase amount of income causes by indirect impact. Near and middle area have more impact than far area.
