Abstract

Santri are prone to experiencing adjustment problems while in the pesantren, especially first year students. One of the factors that influence self-adjustment is emotional intelligence. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between emotional intelligence and students' adjustment. The hypothesis proposed is that there is a relationship between emotional intelligence and the adjustment of students in Islamic boarding schools. The research method used is a correlational quantitative approach. The population in this study were the seventh grade students of MTs. Sampling used cluster random sampling technique by taking lots from 6 classes (a, b, c, d, e, f) into 3 classes (a, b, c) to be sampled. This study uses two scales, namely the emotional intelligence scale with a validity value of 0.8-1.0 and a reliability of 0.846 and a self-adjustment scale with a validity value of 0.8-1.0 and a reliability of 0.821. The data analysis technique used product moment correlation. Based on the results of data analysis, the correlation coefficient value (0.782) and (p) is 0.000 (p <0.01) which indicates a very significant positive relationship between emotional intelligence and self-adjustment, meaning that the higher the emotional intelligence, the higher the adjustment. The categorization results show the level of emotional intelligence and adjustment in the medium category.
