Abstract
HOTS is a process of thinking of students in a higher cognitive level that is developed from various concepts and methods. This study aims to determine and analyze errors and find out the causes of student errors in solving HOTS-oriented algebraic forms. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. The subjects of this study were 6th grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Sukoharjo with 6 students. Data collection techniques are done by written tests and interviews. The validity of the data using triangulation techniques by checking the data at the same source with different techniques, namely the results of tests and interviews. Data analysis techniques with the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research results obtained conceptual errors made by students, namely mistakes not understanding what information is known, procedural errors made by students, namely incomplete errors in answering questions and students not completing work on the questions. The results showed that errors occurred due to several factors, including: the level of student understanding of HOTS-oriented questions was lacking, students were not accustomed to HOTS-oriented questions, the lack of students' understanding of algebraic material, and students were less thorough in answering questions. Keywords: algebra; error analysis; HOTS
