Abstract

In this study the researchers wanted to understand and make motorcycle brake pads using composite materials that are environmentally friendly with several variations in material composition to determine the level of hardness, wear and coefficient of friction of the brake lining. The materials used in this study were fiberglass, aluminum powder (Al-Si) variations of mesh 70, 80, 100, pandanus leaves fiber spines, calcium carbonate, barium sulfate and BQTN 157 polyester resin with catalyst as a binder/matrix. Then the friction with a load of 16 kg was tested for 3 hours with a dry test, water test, oiled test and then calculated the wear and coefficient of friction, and tested the hardness by using a Durometer with ASTM D2240 standard. From the results of the hardness test the highest value on the variation of aluminum (Al-Si) mesh 70, 80, 100 is 100 aluminum mesh with a value of 89.48 HD. The highest friction test results on all conditions of the variation of aluminum (Al-Si) mesh 100 are dry testing 42,44 mm3/hour, water 22,81 mm3/hour, oil 26,21 mm3/hour. From the results of friction testing the highest value of coefficient of friction can be obtained on all conditions of aluminum (Al-Si) mesh 100 variation, dry test 0.663, water 0.644, and oil 0.661. In the micro photo after being tested the friction of the 70 mesh variation brake pad experienced bonding adhesive failure while the 80 and 100 mesh variation experienced cohesive bonding failure. From the results of the discussion it can be concluded that large amounts of aluminum granules (Al-Si) affect the value of hardness, wear and friction coefficient of brake lining.
