Abstract

Many news on social media or incidents around us such as students brawl, promiscuity, alcohol and drugs. It is all the effect of the moral damage. Therefore, the government through the Ministry of National Education has launched a character education program to anticipate more serious moral damage. SMP Negeri 1 Surakarta applies character building patterns to their students through extracurricular activities. This study discusses the form and implementation as well as the supporting and inhibiting factors of extracurricular activities in the context of developing character education in SMP Negeri 1 Surakarta. The purposes of the study are to identify the form of extracurricular activities, to describe the implementation of extracurricular activities, and to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors of extracurricular activities in the context of developing character education in SMP Negeri 1 Surakarta. This study used type of field research with a phenomenological approach. The subjects of the study are the headmaster, teacher’s trainer of extracurricular activities, and students who participating in extracurricular activities. The technique of collecting data used interviewing and documentation. The technique of analysis data used data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The validity of data test used member check and source triangulation . The result of the study were obtained as follows; There are 19 extracurricular activities in SMP Negeri 1 Surakarta which are divided into 4 fields, namely knowledge and language, arts, sports, and personality development. From the 14 extracurricular activities examined, character values that are embeded broadly include religious, discipline, responsibility, tolerance, cooperation, independence, curiosity, love of the motherland, mutual respect, help and honest. The supporting factors in the development of character education in extracurricular activities include the adequate provision of facilities and infrastructure for each extracurricular activity from the school, the giving sufficient honorarium for the teacher's trainer or trainer, student enthusiasm and motivation, the full financial contribution from the school and the support of students’ parents. The inhibiting factors include; the number of trainer or teacher trainer who are competent in each extracurricular activity has not been fulfilled, there are still some teacher trainers / trainers who are less active, there are still some students who are not yet interested in joining extracurricular activities, students saturation, and nature factor (when it is raining).
