Abstract

Indonesia’s natural wealth of wood fuel has great potential to produce various types of charcoal which can be used as a medium for the construction component has heavy burden on tensile and friction loadscarburizing has been widely used to increase carbon content so as to improve the mechanical properties of ship anchor chains thourgh the carburizing process using charcoal media, namely teak charcoal, bamboo charcoal and coconut shell charcoal, and to find out its characteristics and compoundsformed from steel anchor chains that have undergone carburizing and quenching processes. The specimen used for carburizing is cut from the ship chain, and then put into on oven with a charcoal media container. The heating temperature of the carburizing proceaa in the furnace reaches a temperature austenite (850 0) and held for about 60 minutes. After that the specimens are quenched or cooled quickly. Carburizing products are then hardness vikers, SEM testing and XRD testing. The result of hardeness testing showed that the carburizing process in the charcoal media produced the highest hardeness compared to bamboo charcoal and coconut shell media. The hardeness value of carburizing results using teak charcoal is 487.9 VHN, bamboo charcoal is 438.1 VHN shell charcoal coconut of 385.6 VHN. This relates to the smallest grain size based on SEM test. While the XRD test results prove the formation of carbon steel phases or Fe, Fe3C, Fe3O4, where specimen with teak charcoal media have the largest Fe3O4 content.
