Abstract
This study aims at describing the implementation of teaching speaking using retelling story in recount text, students’ difficulties in retelling story in recount text, and the most appropriate technique in retelling story of recount text. The study was done in SMP Negeri 1 Banyudono, Boyolali at the second year, using action research. The researcher took 34 students as the subject of the research. The researcher taught speaking English using retelling story technique. To find the results, the researcher used retelling story in recount text from the students’ in the form of pre-test, assignment, and post-test. To collect the data the researcher used observation, interview, and documents consisted of tests (pre-test and post-test), lesson plan etc. The action consisted of three cycles with each cycle consists of four elements namely: planning, implementing, observing and reflecting. By implementing retelling story in teaching speaking, the students have chance to be active and cooperative in teaching speaking. The students motivate themselves to speak and to practice speaking and the students speaking achievement is better. It can be seen from the result of the student’s activities during action, and the students speaking achievement of speaking. The mean of pre-test is 48, 8, assignment is 74, 5, and post-test is 83, 8. From students responses most of the students said that they like this technique. They could easily learn English speaking. The students admitted that their speaking got improvement. The students could do the post-test better than pre-test which means that the teaching speaking using retelling story is successful to improve the student’s competence.
