Abstract
This study explores teacher’s perception about the gesture technique on teaching speaking in SMP Muhammadiyah 7 Surakarta. The problem in this research are 1) what are the gesture technique used by the teacher on teaching speaking at SMP Muhammadiyah 7 Surakarta; and 2) the teacher’s perceptions about Gesture Technique on teaching speaking at SMP Muhammadiyah 7 Surakarta. The purpose of this study was to learn how the teacher’s perspective is using gesture technique on teaching in the school. This research method uses descriptive qualitative research design. Data collection technique used interview transcript. Based on the results of the analysis that researchers have done, based on interviews conducted with informants, the use of gestures, both facial expressions and hand movements greatly help bridge communication between teacher-students, facilitate students in understanding the intentions conveyed by the teacher, and can improve students' ability to speak foreign languages, especially English. The results show that: 1) The use of gesture, both facial expression and hand movement help bridging communication between teacher and students; 2) Semiotic and functional gesture are the most frequent gesture used.
