Abstract
This study aims to determine the effect of the cooling rate on aluminum casting using permanent molds which were previously subjected to variations in preheat with temperatures of 100°C, 150°C and 200°C on hardness and microstructure. This study uses aluminum which is melted using a crucible furnace. The initial casting process prepares a permanent mold that is preheated. After the aluminum is melted, it can then be poured into a permanent mold. The next process is to disassemble the permanent mold and take cast products. Then the cast product is measured to drop in temperature with an interval of two minutes. From the results of testing the chemical composition there are several elements consisting of, Al 86.91%, Si 8.11%, Zn 2.95%, Fe 1.08%. Judging from the elements present in this material can be classified as aluminum alloy aluminum metal (Al-Si). From the results of observations of the microstructure, the greater the value of the cooling rate, the granules on the microstructure obtained look larger. At a cooling rate of 3.025 °C/minute the micro-grain test results appear large. Whereas at the cooling rate of 2.825 °C/minute and 2.5 °C/minute the micro grain photo test results appear smaller. This affects the hardness of cast products, the smaller and smaller the grain size of the microstructure, the hardness of cast products is also increasing. At a cooling rate of 2.5 °C/minute the hardness value was 78.57 BHN, the cooling rate was 2.825 °C/minute the hardness value was 76.53 BHN and the rate of cooling was 3.025 °C/minute the hardness value was 75.50 BHN.
