Abstract
The objectives of this research are is to describe(1) the types of cognitive strategies and (2) the preferences types of cognitive strategies which are used by good students in learning English. The learning strategy is based on Oxford’s classification of cognitive strategies. This research used qualitative research in the from of a case study research. This research used six students of SMP Muhammadiyah 4 Sambi who had the high report and listed from the English teacher. Data were collected in two ways: give a questionnaire and open-ended interviews. In analysing data, the researcher used Hubberman which consists of data reduction, data display, and verification data. The finding indicate that (1) not all types of cognitive strategies used by good students, they just used 13 types. They are repeating, formally practicing with sounds and writing system, recognizing and using formulas and patterns, practicing naturalistically, getting the idea quickly, using resources for receiving and sending messages, reasoning deductively, analysing contrastively, translating, transferring, taking notes, summarizing, and highlighting. The preferences types of cognitive strategies used by good students are translating and highlighting. The use of cognitive strategies helpful for good students in improving their English achievement.
