Abstract
Casting is a process of melting metal by melt it down, then poured it into a mold and let it freeze. The most common printed sand is mountain sand, beach sand, river sand, and silica sand that is provided by nature. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of sand mold variations on sand permeability, shrinkage, porosity, density, hardness, microstructure, and chemical composition. This research was conducted by using aluminum as material which is melted in the smelting kitchen, with variations of black sand mold, red sand mold, and silica sand mold. Analysis of chemical composition testing contained several elements including Si 12.2655%, 2.0768% Fe, and 1.7669% Cu, all that elements can be classified aluminum metal alloy Silicon (Al-Si). The results of permeability testing of Black Sand is 50.17 cmᵌ / minute, Red Sand 78.23 cmᵌ / minute, and Silica Sand 150.13 cmᵌ / minute. The percentage value of clay black sand 17.04%, red sand 12.56%, silica sand 8.38%. The percentage value of the shrinkage of the silica sand mold with a value of 1.49%, while the variation of the red sand mold is 1.45%, and the lowest percentage value is the variation of the black sand mold that is 1.42%. The value of the density of silica sand variation is 2.68 gr / ml, while the variation of red sand variation is 2.57 gr / ml, and the black sand variation is 2.5 gr / ml. And for the results of rockwell hardness testing, it was found that the highest hardness price was found in Silica Sand reaching 66.9 HRB. The price of this hardness was the highest compared to hardness using black sand which was 61.7 HRB and hardness on red sand was 63.8 HRB.
