Abstract

This study discussed depression using the historical approach. There are some terms that must be determined so that there is no misunderstanding. This study aims (1) to identify the indicators of depression, (2) to describe how the depression depicted in the novel, and (3) to find the author’s reason addressed the depression in the novel. The material object of the study is the novel of Sputnik Sweetheart by Haruki Murakami. The formal object of the study is the main character or the people selected the second character, third character, and another supporter some character on the novel related to the depression which is reflected in Sputnik Sweetheart by Haruki Murakami. This study belongs to descriptive qualitative research in which the data was collecting and selecting both of primary and secondary data source compatible with the problem statement and objectives of the study. The data are analyzed through Beck’s theory (1976) of depression symptoms, and Tyson’s theory (2006) of historical approach. The results show that (1) All the elements in the theory are appropriate and appear in the novel that researcher used as objects of study, (2) the depression that can be indentified through the depiction of the character, setting, events, and style, (3) The depression addressed in the novel because it is depression that happen in the real life. The author tells that depression can occur from childhood. Keywords: depression, social, and historical theory.
