Abstract

Moving to a new place is one way out for individuals to improve themselves and so is the decision of many students who choose to study abroad to continue their education at the best university. This study aims to understand the process of decision making at the University of Muhammadiyah Surakarta in overseas students. This study uses a qualitative narrative research method. The symptom in this research is that it will reveal the decision of overseas students to continue their studies at the University of Muhammadiyah Surakarta. Data collection methods used in this study were interviews with 5 informants of psychology students class of 2018 who came from outside Java. The results of the interview stressed that the informants felt they had explored the information of various desired tertiary institutions, to consider and compare material. The informant then makes the decision to choose one of the best alternatives followed by selection. After declarated not to pass the selection of state tertiary institutions, all informants chose private tertiary institutions, namely Muhammadiyah University Surakarta with consideration of proximity to family, close to high school informants, and accreditation.
