Abstract
The development of advanced technology at this time requires good quality materials, especially metal-based materials. Mechanical properties of metal materials such as: hardness, strength, toughness and wear which are always associated with formed compounds in the which material. This encourages the need for research and development of technology, will change the formed compounds in metal surface. This study aims to determine the effect of variations in the composition ratio of gas N2 and CH4 (1: 1, 1: 2, 1: 3 and 1: 4) with duration time of 4 hours, and with temperaturs of 450 oC, and gas pressure of 1.6 mBar to formed compounds , hardness and wear resistance on the surface of commercially pure titanium before and after the nitrocarburizing plasma process. From the test results the value of initial material (raw material) was 105.75 VHN, with the optimum plasma nitrocarburation process for 4 hours, temperature of 450 oC and pressure of 1,6 mBar up to 236.32 VHN, experiencing an increase of 111%. Whereas in the cross section hardness test the closest point to the surface has almost the same hardness as the surface and experiences a decrease in hardness at the point below. At the wear test the initial 4,468 × 10-8 mm² / kg decreases to6,140×10-9 mm² / kg. These changes occur because of the formation of TiN and TiC compounds on the surface of commercially pure titanium after nitrocarburation plasma processing.
