Abstract

This research aims to describe the ability of the students in translating words problems into mathematical models and solutions, and to find out the students’ mistake in completing their task about One Variable Linear Equation (PLSV). The subjects of this research are 32 students of grade VII E SMP Negeri 2 Banyudono. The data collection techniques used in this research is test results and interviews. The data were analyzed through data reduction, presentation and drawing conclusion. The subjects tested are 6 students’ with high category abilities, medium category abilities and low category abilities. Subjects with high category abilities are able to translate problem story into mathematical model appropriately; however, some of them did not recheck their work result. Subjects with medium category abilities can understand the problem; however, they have trouble making the mathematical models and solutions. While, subjects with low category abilities can not understand the problem and having trouble making mathematical models and solutions. The result of this research explains that in the process of translating problem story, the students are not yet use the Polya steps that understand the problem, resolve the problem in the form of mathematical models, take steps to complete the mathematical models, and rechecking the problem solving. The mistakes of the students in this research are the students’ understanding, error reading and calculation.
